Georgia remains a conservative country, where hate and aggression towards sexual minorities are common. Hiding would be the instinctive thing to do, but not everyone can afford to.

Having complicated and violent life journeys, many transgender women end up homeless and in order to survive, they become sex workers. Georgia has been at the forefront of the movement towards more inclusiveness in the South Caucasus region. Its government has been striving towards closer ties with Europe, and this determination has led to improvements in the overall human rights situation, and more specifically of the human rights of LGBTI people. This progress in the legal sphere is undeniable.

However, despite the existence of laws and guidelines prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, discrimination and violence against LGBTI people continue and the everyday lives of members of the LGBTI community are a far cry from this paper reality. Among the most vulnerable are those who identify as transgender. Some of the manifestations of structural and systemic violence that transgender women face on a daily basis are: denial of employment, absence of legal recognition of their gender, the inaccessibility of all things relating to transition, excommunication by families and communities, unwillingness of house owners to rent out living space to them, verbal and physical violence wherever they go. This photo story is my attempt to share the stories of these women. They chose not to give up, but to live and somehow survive in an environment where they are most unwelcome.

საქართველოში ხშირად ვხვდებით სექსუალური უმცირესობების მიმართ აგრესიასა და ძალადობას. ასეთ გარემოში ინსტიქტური მოთხოვნილება ხალხისთვის თავის არიდება, დამალვა იქნებოდა, თუმცა, ყველას არ აქვს ამის ფუფუნება.

რთული გზის გავლის შემდეგ, ბევრი ტრანსგენდერი ქალი ქუჩაში რჩება და იძულებული ხდება სექს სამუშაოთი დაკავდეს.

მიუხედავად არსებული ანტი-დისკრიმინაციული კანონმდებლობისა და სახელმძღვანელო პრინციპებისა, რომლებიც კრძალავს დისკრიმინაციას სექსუალური ორიენტაციისა და გენდერული იდენტობის საფუძველზე, ლგბტი ადამიანების მიმართ ჩაგვრა და ძალადობა გრძელდება და თემის წევრების ყოველდღიური ცხოვრება ფურცელზე არსებული რეალობისგან შორს დგას. მათ შორის კი ყველაზე დაუცველები ტრანსგენდერი ადამიანები არიან.

ისინი ყოველდღიურად აწყდებიან სხვადასხვა სტრუქტურულ თუ სისტემურ ძალადობას, როგორიც არის დასაქმებაზე უარის თქმა, გენდერის სამართლებრივი აღიარების არარსებობა, ტრანზიციის პროცესის ხელმისაწვდომობის პრობლემა, ოჯახის მიერ მათი უარყოფა, ვერბალური და სიტყვიერი შეურაცხყოფა.

ეს ფოტო სერია არის იმ ტრანსგენდერი ქალების ყოველდღიურობის ჩვენების მცდელობა, რომლბიც მათთვის მტრულად განწყობილ გარემოში, გადარჩენას ირჩევენ და არ ნებდებიან.

Mano Svanidze

Mano Svanidze (1992) is a Georgian photographer currently based in Tbilisi. She graduated from Tbilisi State University, faculty of Economics and Business with a BA in Marketing. She also studied composition and music for 10 years. In 2009 she discovered her interest in photography. Mano is a member and co-founder of Georgian Photo Collective - 90’x Collective. Her work has been published in various media outlets and exhibited in several countries including Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, South Korea, United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Italy. Among different nominations and awards, In 2019 Mano received Equality Award for her long term documentary work about transgender women in Georgia. She is also one of the winners of Multimedia Production Lab Grant for South Caucasian female photographers. In 2020 Mano was selected as one of 30 best women photographers under the age of 30; the same year she won Magnum Photo Workshop Scholarship with Antoine D'agata.

Currently she works as a freelance photojournalist.

მანო სვანიძე თვითნასწავლი ქართველი ფოტოგრაფია, რომელიც ამჟამად თბილისში მდებარეობს. მანო სვანიძე ქართველი ფოტოგრაფია, რომელიც ამჟამად თბილისში ცხოვრობს. მანო 90’x კოლექტივის წევრი და თანადამფუძნებელია. მისი ნამუშევრები გამოქვეყნდა სხვადასხვა მედიასაშუალებებში და გამოიფინა რამდენიმე ქვეყანაში, მათ შორის საქართველოში, სომხეთში, აზერბაიჯანში, უკრაინაში, სამხრეთ კორეაში, დიდ ბრიტანეთში, ნორვეგიაში, შვედეთში, გერმანიასა და იტალიაში. სხვადასხვა ნომინაციებსა და ჯილდოებს შორის, 2019 წელს მანომ მიიღო თანასწორობის ჯილდო საქართველოში ტრანსგენდერი ქალების შესახებ გრძელვადიანი დოკუმენტური მუშაობისთვის. ის ასევე არის მულტიმედიის წარმოების ლაბორატორიის გრანტის ერთ-ერთი გამარჯვებული სამხრეთ კავკასიელი ქალი ფოტოგრაფებისთვის.
